The phrase is marketing, not a category
France still has no legally distinct digital nomad visa as of September 2026. “Digital nomad visa” is language used by relocation companies and media; it is not a France-Visas category, and you will not find it on the application.
Remote workers employed by non-French companies apply under the standard long-stay visitor visa, with the same documentation as any visitor applicant.
What you actually apply for
- A valid passport with 6+ months validity beyond the intended stay
- Stable monthly resources at or around net SMIC — roughly €1,426–€1,500 a month in 2026 — or savings of roughly €17,000–€18,000 to cover a year
- Comprehensive health insurance covering the full stay, including repatriation and emergency care
- Proof of accommodation in France
- A signed declaration (attestation sur l’honneur) not to work in France
Figures you see quoted vary with whether a consulate is referencing gross SMIC, around €1,802 a month, or net. The requirement is “sufficient means”, assessed case by case.
Consulates now ask about the arrangement
Some consulates now ask for more detail on remote work: an employer letter confirming the arrangement is compatible with French residency, and how your time will be split between France and elsewhere.
Whether the visitor visa permits remote work for a purely foreign employer remains genuinely contested and evolving. It clearly does not permit working for a French employer or French clients. Do not settle the question on the strength of a forum post, in either direction.
